Character Rigs

The Kaghati short film features grandpa and granddaughter characters. To create consistent rigs and quickly achieve capable and flexible rigging, the team and I decided to work with the Advanced Skeleton plugin. Advanced Skeleton required some customization, such as flip flop controls for the characters, controls for the cloth wrap on the grandpa’s head, and more. However, the overall character setups are similar between the granddaughter and the grandpa.

Kite Prop Rig

Responsible for rig and kite spool model.

This hero kite rig uses wire deformers and cluster points, allowing the kite’s string to bend and twist organically. I tested a manual and dynamic version of the string rig; however, the manual rig better allowed our animators to get the performance needed for the film.

Kite Simulation

Responsible for nCloth simulation.

Maya’s nCloth system simulated the kite cloth throughout the ending shots of the film. Each cloth mesh was constrained to the animated kite frames to capture the overall movement of the kites.
